Calling all Kung Fu Students!

The Guangdong Overseas Chinese Cultural Exchange Association will provide 6 members of the Chinese Culture Center who have experience in martial arts with a complete Traditional Kung Fu training immersion program from December 1st to December 31st, 2010. The training camp will be held at the Chan Wu Center [禅武中心 ] in Guangdong
and will consist of kung fu training, Chan lectures, and field trips to heritage sites. This opportunity is open to CCC members in good physical health. Please contact the Chinese Culture Center for more details about how to apply!

Dear CCC Family,

Though the seasons have changed and our days are growing shorter, autumn will be one of the busiest and most exciting seasons that the CCC has ever seen! Beginning this month, the CCC gallery will transition from Stella Zhang's cutting-edge contemporary pieces to house Pat Tseng's classical adornments. We are looking forward to celebrating our 45th anniversary at the 2010 Harmony and Bliss gala this October, and are very excited for the opportunity to meet you at one of our board-sponsored membership events throughout the season.

We are also thrilled to announce that the CCC was recently joined by three new staff members, each of whom bring unique talents and fresh ideas to our work in the community. A big welcome to Program Director Ben Wong, Administrative and Project Assistant Jenny Leung, and Roots Program Associate Rosa Wong-Chie.

2010 has been a landmark year for the CCC and our community. It's been wonderful to see the positive effects of art on our neighborhood's economic and cultural revitalization, and of course on the city's diversity. We embrace this vision, and welcome everyone to realize progressive perspectives in Chinese and Chinese American cultural heritage.Thank you for your continuing support. Upcoming Events

New Exhibition Opening: Pat Tseng - Emblems of Ethereal Grace

The CCC is proud to present Pat Tseng's newest gallery exhibit, "Emblems of Ethereal Grace," opening September 25, 2010. CCC members are invited to attend the opening gala on September 25 from 2-4pm.

Timeless, exquisite and subtle, Pat Tseng's work defies categorization: it is both jewelry and fine art. Her work has been exhibited in museums such as the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Museum of Fine Arts, and also in retail venues ranging from Saks Fifth Avenue to the Smithsonian.

Her work combines contemporary craft and ageless artifact, using novel silk knotting techniques and patterns and integrating ancient Chinese jade, jewels, and carvings. The adornments in this particular exhibition represent the mature work of the artist at her best.

Running from September 25. 2010 through January 8th, 2011, Emblems of Ethereal Grace will be on view Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm at the Chinese Culture Center Gallery, 750 Kearny St., 3rd floor. Admission to the gallery is entirely free.

We would like to acknowledge Pat's generous contribution of a special collection consisting of 29 adornments to our center, which will be available for purchase during the opening reception on September 25. All proceeds will be dedicated to supporting CCC exhibitions in 2011. Pat's collection will only be available for sale at the CCC Gallery Shop.

Fall Membership Drive

Please consider joining us at one of our membership events throughout the season. We've designed each of these get-togethers to help CCC staff and members get to know one another in a casual, comfortable, and family-fun setting. Both members and friends are welcome to RSVP, and to bring guests to these events.

September 25th, 12-2pm: Dim Sum Luncheon and meet-and-greet with CCC artists Kan Kwok fan and Stella Zhang. There's still time to RSVP to this event, where staff, board members, and artists will be on hand to get to know one another over a dim sum buffet provided by the famous Clement Restaurant. CCC event space, 750 Kearny St. 3rd Floor.

October 16th: Harmony and Bliss. This year we commemorate our landmark 45th anniversary, and as such will be celebrating our founders and the individuals whose contributions have most deeply influenced our achievements as an organization. The evening will feature a champagne reception followed by dinner with wine pairings as well as a live and silent auction. Empress of China Restaurant, 838 Grant Avenue, 5th floor.

November: Late in the season, CCC board member Norman Yee will host members and friends for a wine and cheese event Be sure to invite all interested friends for an evening of fine wines and artisan cheeses. Date and time TBA.

Ongoing Programs and Partnerships

CCC Artist Hou Yumei Chosen to Design Permanent Installation for the Central Subway in Chinatown

The Chinese Culture Center is thrilled to celebrate the selection of CCC resident visual artist Hou Yumei by the San Francisco Arts Commission for the Central Subway Public Art Project. As an immigrant of Manchurian descent, Hou Yumei is unique within the pool of six artists whose work will commemorate the opening of a series of new subway stations throughout San Francisco because it is an unprecedented showcasing of art created by an immigrant Chinese artist as part of an SFAC commissioned public art project. As a genius practitioner of Chinese paper cutting, her installation, which will be on display at the Chinatown subway station, displays her re-imagined artwork of traditional crafts in a piece titled "Yang Ge Dance of Northeast China."

In the decision to select Hou Yumei, the San Francisco Art Commission stated that her work is "based on traditional Chinese paper cut art depicting a popular outdoor folk dance from the Northeastern provinces of China. The folk dance is a form of storytelling, and the artist's work includes imagery from a number of popular legends as well as scenes from everyday life." As commuters pass through the station, they too will be integrated into the movement and celebration of her work.

The piece will be a permanent fixture within the first subway station ever to serve San Francisco's Chinatown and will represent both a flourishing of the arts in our community and a heightened visibility for Chinatown as a cultural center within the city.

New Tai Chi Class

The CCC has added a new Tai Chi class taught in Chinese. The course is based on the Yang Family style of Tai Chi, which uses easily learned and practice stances that improve balance and agility.

Classes is held Wednesday and Friday evening from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Instructor Zhou Shufen is certified to teach by the China National Martial Arts Association, is a National First Class Social Physical Education Instructor in China and a Guangzhou Martial Arts Association Physical Health Quigong Committee Supervisor.

Our Tuesday and Thursday Chan style Tai Chi Class with instructor Debbie Au also continues on as scheduled.
