Believing in what you can't fully see

December 21, 2010

Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word;  for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."

Luke 2:25-32

This is such a remarkable story that many overlook when they read the first few chapters of Luke. God tells Simeon that he is going to see the long-awaited Messiah in his lifetime. So when he finds the young boy Jesus in the Temple, he runs to him, picks him up in his arms, and praises God for the salvation he has sent. Just imagine holding a small child in your arms and knowing he is your Savior. Talk about faith!

Today, we can look back at the coming of Christ and we know the whole story of his life, his death, and his resurrection. We have the entire message. But to be able to look at a little helpless child, and to believe and  receive him as Savior takes so much faith.

Many years from now when all of God's people are spending eternity with him in heaven, we'll be able to look back on his faithfulness and see how he came through in the toughest situations. But what we don't know now we accept on faith, just like Simeon. As the apostle Paul says, we now "see in a mirror dimly" what we will eventually see "face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Yes, we see dimly. But we do see!

God loves you and his promises never fail. So until that day we see them fulfilled face to face and our faith shall be made sight, trust in God's promises.

GOD'S PROMISES NEVER FAIL. SO TRUST THAT WHAT YOU SEE DIMLY TODAY WILL BE CLEARLY SEEN IN HIS PERFECT TIMING.
