Dubbed as "Kabuki Renaissance," the Association for theTraditional Performing Arts of Japan (Nippon Dento Geino Shinkokai) in Tokyo will bring its Kabuki production "The Ghost of Oyuki" to theRedondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Redondo Beach, CA 90278 on Saturday, November 13, at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm. "The Ghost of Oyuki" is produced by Butai Souzou Kenkyusho in Tokyo with the cooperation of Team J Station in Lomita. This program is supported by the Japan Foundation. With the original Japanese title "Oukyo no Yuurei" (The Ghost of Oukyo), this Kabuki production was inspired by an artwork by famous Edo era painter Maruyama Oukyo (1733-1795). One day, the antique shop owner Jinzou exhibits a ghost-painting-hanging-scroll with Maruyama Oukyo's signature and starts to drink with the joy of his efforts in selling this scroll. After a while, he hears a strange sound coming out of nowhere. Suddenly, he notices that the ghost in the painting is trying to escape from the canvas. It turns out that the painting is the real work of Maruyama Oukyo, and that the ghost, Oyuki, is beinglured out from the scroll by thesake. A comical story, "The Ghost of Oyuki" will be performed by Nagare Hagiwara as the skillful merchant, Senyoichi Nishikawa as a rich fool, and Yukiji Asaoka as a lovely lady ghost who enjoys sake. The stage created by the funny and bizarre acting will give audiences genuine entertainment. Before the "The Ghost of Oyuki" program, a workshop "How to create Sanbaso" and the performance of "Ayatsuri Sanbaso" (Puppet Sanbaso) will be scheduled. A number of school children will be invited to the program for free. And three children from each school will be awarded scholarships after an essay competition about the Kabuki performance.
