Living under the authority of Christ

November 12, 2010

...and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:19-23

It happens to the best of us. You're cruising along in your car when all of a sudden, you see those flashing red and blue lights in your rearview mirror. So you pull over and a person in a police uniform walks up to your car.

As you roll down the window, the first thing out of the officer's mouth is, "I'm ____________ from the _____________ Police Department." Before any charges are leveled or you can make a defense (if you have one!), the officer establishes that he has the authority to pull you over.

Every person has some kind authority over him. These include the government, your boss at work, and even the coach of your softball team! Any group of people must have an authority over them to prevent anarchy.

God has placed Jesus Christ in the position of authority over the Church. And since Christ is the head of the Church, the Bible says that the Church is the "Body of Christ." Isn't it wonderful to have such a gracious Savior who allows us to be a part of this Body instead of simply dominating over us?

As a member of the body of Christ, you aren't simply ruled over by Jesus. You have a role to play in this Body of which he is the head. So as you submit to Christ's authority, know that he cares about your role as a part of his Body!

SUBMIT TO CHRIST'S AUTHORITY AND KNOW THAT HE CARES FOR YOU!
