Japanese films to be featured at AFI FEST 2010, Nov 7, 8

An outstanding line-up of films featuring Japanese talent and themes await cinemagoers at AFI FEST 2010 presented by Audi. AFI FEST will take place in Hollywood, California at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Mann Chinese 6 theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel from November 4-11.

13 ASSASSINS: 9:30 PM, Nov 7, the Mann Chinese Theatre

13 ASSASSINS will screen in the World Cinema section, which presents new works by many of the world's most renowned filmmakers. The film, directed by Takashi Miike, is about a band of samurai swordsmen who attempt an impossible assassination.

Takashi Miike has directed over 70 film and television productions since his direct-to-video debut in 1991. His genre-bending films are often controversial and have attracted a cult following. Some of his best-known works include AUDITION (1999), ICHI THE KILLER (2001) and THE HAPPINESS OF THE

KATAKURIS (2001).

OUTRAGE: 9:15 PM, Nov 8, the Mann Chinese Theatre

Also screening in World Cinema is OUTRAGE, which is about several yakuza clans who battle for power in the Japanese underworld. One of the world's most versatile and surprising artists, director Takeshi Kitano began his career as a stand-up comedian. Alongside his work as a filmmaker, he leads successful parallel careers as an actor, painter, novelist, poet and video game designer.

Among his numerous award-winning films are SONATINE (1993), HANA-BI (1997) and ZATOICHI (2003).

LITTLEROCK: 7:15 PM, Nov 8, the Mann Chinese Theatre

In LITTLEROCK, a Japanese student discovers a different America than the one in her dreams, when her car breaks down on a sightseeing tour of California. The film will screen in the Young Americans section, featuring work by emerging U.S. filmmakers whose stories reflects the distinct American regions in which they are set. An MFA graduate of CalArts where he studied under Thom Andersen and James Benning, director Mike Ott's work explores the Los Angeles hinterlands of his youth. His previous films ANALOG DAYS (2006) and A. EFFECT (2008) have screened at festivals worldwide. He currently teaches film production in Valencia, California.
