Dear Community Member:

April is coming to a close, but there are still so many exciting events happening in the Bay Area! We are thrilled to co-sponsor a free concert in Union Square on Wednesday, April 27th. That will take place at 12:30 pm and will feature contemporary and classical Arabic music. There is more information about it below, plus details of a full calendar's worth of other events!

Also, are you looking for a housekeeper, nanny, caregiver or do you have a small business with vacancies? April 23: Aswat Easter Concert

6 to 8 pm at the College of San Mateo Theater, $25

As the Arab World navigates the vicissitudes of history, Zawaya calls upon the Bay Area to come together for a night of music and song to commemorate Easter and Intifada. Buy tickets here.

April 28: Book Launch at SFSU

12:30 to 3:30 pm at the Ethnic Studies and Psychology Building, EP 116, SFSU

Celebrate the launch of the new book, "Arab and Arab American Feminisms" with Dr. Rabab Abdulhadi, Happy Hyder, Randa Jarrar, and Zeina Zaatar. This event is co-sponsored by Race and Resistance Studies at SFSU and the ACCC.

April 22: Wael Ghonim at Stanford

7:15 pm at Cubberley Auditorium, Stanford

Founder of the Facebook group that first called for demonstrations on January 25, Wael Ghonim has become the international voice of the Egyptian revolution. Hear his story and perspective on the ongoing revolution and future of Egypt. To be followed by insights from Dr. Ossama Hassanein of TechWadi on initiatives to move Egypt forward.

April 26: "Beyond the Revolution" at Dominican University

7 pm at the Creekside Room, Dominican University, San Rafael

Panel discussion of the revolutions in Egypt and North Africa, social media and women's place in democracy. Featuring Professor Dina Ibrahim of SFSU, Nour Ahmadien and Jeremiah Davis of Yalla Student Association, Afaf Steiert of AFAF Translations and moderated by author Zoe Ferraris.

April 30: Tarab Nights in San Jose

Social Hour at 6:30 pm, music at 7:30 pm at the Arab American Community Center of Silicon Valley

$25 per person (Only $20 for AACC-SV Members)

The Georges Lammam Ensemble in concert, featuring accordion virtuoso Elias Lammam. Hors d'œuvres, light dinner and tea provided.



April 23: Afghan Ensemble in SF

8:00 pm at Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, 415-392-4400

$25/$35/$50. $75 seating includes VIP reception with the artists

Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan (S.A.R.A.) is an extraordinary ensemble of internationally recognized musicians who mix vocals with the rubab, doyra, tabla, and on special occasion, the national dance of Afghanistan, the attan.

April 26: Arab Feminist Book Launch

7 to 9 pm at Modern Times Bookstore, 888 Valencia St, San Francisco

Celebrate the launch of the new edited volume: "Arab and Arab American Feminisms." Featuring: Dr. Rabab Abdulhadi, Janaan Attia, Happy Hyder, Huda Jadallah, Nadie Naber and more.

Produced in San Francisco, "Corner Store" follows the story of Yousef Elhaj, beloved shop owner, Palestinian immigrant, long-distance father, and his struggle to make good on the promise of a better life for his family.

The ACCC co-presents the 9:15 screening on May 22 and will participate in the post-screening discussion.

April 23: Revolution in Egypt and the Media

6:30 pm at the Arab American Cultural Center of Silicon valley
3968 Twilight Dr, at Houge Park, San Jose 95124

Dina Ibrahim (Assoc. Prof. of Journalism at SFSU) and Sharat Lin (eye witness at Tahrir Square during revolution) will discuss facts and media reporting of the People’s revolution in Egypt.

April 27: Free Concert in Union Square

12:20 pm to 1:30 pm in Union Square, San Francisco

Classical and contemporary Arabic music with vocalist Dalia Marina, accompanied by traditional instrumentalists on oud, qanun, ney and percussion. Co-sponsored by the Jewels in the Square and the ACCC.
