Luminosity in Monochrome:
Japanese Ink Painting and Calligraphy, Rotation 2

November 20, 2010 through January 22, 2011

The winter rotation of Luminosity in Monochrome, The Life of the Mind, presents calligraphy and representations of mythology and faith from the 15th century to the present day.

Visitors have the chance to see artworks from a broad range of stylistic and historical backgrounds painted entirely in ink. The absence of color challenges the artist to create a sense of form and rhythm simply through his or her handling of the brush.

Calligraphy, the foundation of ink painting, is a major part of the second rotation. Ranging from a small, delicate work created in the early 18th century, to a spectacular, ten-foot square piece completed in 2009, the variety of calligraphic works will allow the viewer to appreciate how calligraphy is as much an art form as painting is.

Paintings of religious subjects, including four from the famed Sanso Collection, tell the story of Japanese faith. Other works depict figures from Japanese folklore.

The Clark Center for Japanese Art & Culture is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 12:30 to 5:00 pm with a Docent Tour every Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and active military (with ID), 12 and under are free. Closed on Nov 25 & 26 for Thanksgiving Holidays and Dec 23 through Jan 2 for Christmas and New Years Holidays.
