The difference between the world's love and God's love
November 17, 2010
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Awhile back, I was reading a few definitions of love. One teenager said, "That love is an inward inexpressibility of an outward all-overishness" (whatever that means!). Somebody else said, "Love is a feeling you feel when you feel you're going to feel a feeling you never felt before."
But you and I know that love is not just a feeling—it's a commitment! Now, human love says, "I love you if you love me" or "I love you because you're good-looking." But you should be careful to not fall into that kind of love. When you get married, are you going to love your spouse unconditionally? Are you going to feel the same about him/her at 50 as you did when you were 21?
True love—God's love—is not an "if" love or a "because-of love. No, it's an "in-spite-of" love!
God loves you in spite of the fact that you are a sinner. Because of our sin, all of us appear to God as smelly, dirty, and ugly creatures. But praise the Lord that his love is not based upon what he can get out of it!
The Scripture tells us that "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). The love of God is unconditional, unchangeable, and forever! And when the love of God is in us, then we have the same wonderful love to share with everyone else.
