Why you should be a disciple-maker

November 5, 2010

And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

Acts 6:7

One question I commonly hear from other pastors is "How can I grow my church?" And unfortunately for some, church growth can begin to take precedence over making disciples. Many teachers have put aside the correct teaching of the Word of God and embraced a "safer" approach that doesn't deal with the tough issues. They do this so more people will come and listen to them.

But do you know how to grow a church? You make disciples! Why? Because disciple-making uses the power of multiplication, not just addition.

Here's an example for you: Let's say person A wants to just bring more people into his church and person B wants to make disciples. Both of them invest in one person every six months for five years. Over the course of five years, person A will have invested in 10 people.

But person B makes disciples who go and make one other disciple every 6 months. Then that new disciple does the same. Over the course of five years, person B will have invested in 1,024 people!

The biblical model of church growth focuses on the making of disciple-making disciples. Each disciple should have at least one other person he or she disciples and then sends out to do the same. So find people who you can pour into and raise up to be faithful believers who will continue spreading the Word of God and building up the body of Christ!

DON'T JUST ADD TO THE BODY OF CHRIST, MULTIPLY IT THROUGH DISCIPLE-MAKING!
