Dont Miss it!
Friday November 5th, 8pm Shanghai Stories Presented by Melody of China and Asian Improv Arts A Musical Event Exploring Jazz Music with Chinese Instruments
Don't miss CCC friends Melody of China and Asian Improv Arts performing the innovative Shanghai Stories, which blends both traditional Chinese and jazz music for a cross-cultural sound that is truly one of a kind.
This world premiere of Shanghai Stories features a score composed by saxophonist Francis Wong and is performed by Melody of China with Wong and leading Bay Area jazz legends Wayne Wallace (trombone), Deszon Claiborne (trapset drums) and Chicago innovator Tatsu Aoki (string bass). The piece is based on the memoirs of Wong's 89 year old father who was born and raised in Shanghai to age 13. It explores the intersection of worlds that took place in Shanghai in the 1920's and '30's, where Western musical forms intermingled with traditional Chinese sources to create a distinct local flavor that has become internationally renowned. Saxophone, trombone, bass and drums together with Yangqin, Pipa, Sheng, Guzheng, Erhu, Dizi and Suona will offer a stirring reflection of this unique period in Chinese history. Lyrical melodies and infectious rhythms will captivate, inspire and give voice to the musical memories inherent in this eclectic cultural legacy.
