April 12th at 7:30 pm: Tariq Ramadan (Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University) presents "The Quest for Meaning: Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism" in the Cubberley Auditorium. April 20th at 5:30 pm: Christopher Davidson (School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University) presents "Dubai, the UAE and the Gulf States: Autocracy in Question" in Levinthal Hall. April 29th from 8 am to 5:30 pm: "Conference on Democratic Transition in Egypt," featuring Joel Beinin, Lisa Blaydes, Larry Diamond and Lina Khatib of Stanford, among others. Brown, author April 23 at 5:30 pm: Panel Event "Regain Control of the Muslim-American Narrative through Islamic Scholarship" On April 9 th, Jonathan A.C. Brown (Assistant Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Washington) speaks with Shaykh Abdullah Hamid Ali of Zaytuna College and Jason van Bloom of the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC) about his book “Hadith: Muhammad’s Legacy in the Medieval and Modern World.” Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. The ICCNC is located at 1433 Madison Street, Oakland. | | MIRAL opens in the Bay Area Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Rula Jebreal, Julian Schnabel’s new film "MIRAL" is a poignant and powerful drama that chronicles nearly four decades of change in the Middle East, told entirely from the unique perspective of a young Palestinian girl named Miral, from the late 1940s onward. Miral is now playing in the Bay Area at Landmark Embarcadero Cinemas in San Francisco and Century Regency theater in San Rafael. More information is available on the film's website. | San Francisco Int'l Women's Film Festival presents "Three Veils" April 10th at 7:30 pm Roxie Theater, San Francisco The April festival features films by women and about women, including Rolla Selbak's "Three Veils," which tells the intertwining stories of three Arab women as they attempt to move away from tradition and mold their own lives. The films' schedule and more information are here. | Two anti-war events in San Francisco April 9th at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist (15th and Julian Streets, San Francisco), starting at 6 pm April 10th in Dolores Park at 11 am On April 9th, the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) presents an evening with Malalai Joya entitled "Ending the War in Afghanistan." Joya has been called "the bravest woman in Afghanistan." She was the youngest member elected to the Afghan Parliament but was suspended for denouncing the warlords and the US/NATO war and occupation. The evening will include music by Kaylah Marin and light refreshments. There is a suggested donation of $10 - $25, but no one will be turned away. On April 10th, AROC will lead a Rally Against the Wars at Home and Abroad, also featuring Malalai Joya. This rally is a call to: bring home U.S. Troops; stop threats of war against Iran, North Korea and Yemen; end U.S. support for the occupation of Palestine; end to FBI raids and persecution of minority communities, and will serve as a demand for jobs, education and social services in America for all people.
