Looking for a way to give back to our community? There are plenty of opportunities this May, starting on the very first day of the month!

May 1, 2011: March for Immigrant Rights, sponsored by the Arab, African, Middle Eastern, Muslim, South Asian (AAMEMSA) Immigrant Rights Coalition, a multi-ethnic collaboration seeking to build migrant solidarity around the promotion and defense of our communties’ civil and human rights. They strive to bring AAMEMSA voices to the Immigrant Rights movement. Look for the yellow AAMEMSA Banner at the 24th Street BART Plaza by Bank of the West. Check out their Facebook event page here.

Then, on May 14th and in honor of the seventh annual Arab American Service Day, the ACCC is sponsoring a day of community involvement and gardening in Berkeley.

The mission of Spiral Gardens’ Urban Garden Center is to create healthy sustainable communities by promoting a strong local food system and encouraging productive use of urban soil. The ACCC supports environmental sustainability and community-building. 

And, on May 18th, all community members are invited to the ACCC to participate in the first of our Know Your City Leaders series to meet local leaders and discuss issues important to our community. There is more infomation on this event below.

 

May 2

Reception and Lecture with Dr. Salman Abu-Sitta
 
6 pm: Reception and 7pm: Lecture at the ACCC
“Mapping Palestine: For its Survival or its Destruction?”
 
Salman H. Abu-Sitta (b. 1938) is a Palestinian researcher who writes about Palestinian refugees and the Palestinian right to return. He is the author of over 300 articles and papers and several books on refugees, al-Nakba and the right of return. Dr. Abu-Sitta is a member of Palestine National Council, Founder and President of the Palestine Land Society (PLS) and General Coordinator of Right of Return Congress.  He has spent forty years digging for any and all details related to Palestine before, during and after the creation of Israel.

May 12
An Evening with Awad Abdel Fattah

6:30 to 9 pm at the ACCC
 
Join the U.S. Palestinian Community Network in commemorating 63 years of al-Nakba with a guest speaker from Palestine – 1948. Awad Abdel Fattah will give a speech entitled: “63 years after Nakba and the impact of the youth revolutions in the Arab world and Palestine.” Awad Abdel Fattah is Secretary General of the Arab National Democratic Assembly. He will speak about issues and questions such as: Is it still possible to speak of a solution to the Palestinian question without addressing the plight of the Palestinians in Israel? And finally, what impact will the Arab revolutions have on the Palestinian cause and national and democratic struggle?

May 19

Book Reading and Reception with Kathy Saade Kenny
 
7 to 9 pm at the ACCC
 
The evening will begin with a poetry reading by Lorene Zarou-Zouzounis, after which Kathy Saady Kenny will present her book, Katrina in Five Worlds/Katrina en Cinco Mundos. Kathy Saade Kenny is a writer and activist who traces her family origins to Bethlehem, Palestine and Mexico. Her book is the bilingual biography of her Palestinian grandmother, Katrina Sa’ade.  Drawing upon family records, taped interviews and long-lost letters, this dramatic emigrant women’s tale explores the historical and social events that thrust young Katrina into far-flung places, including Northern Mexico during the Revolution, and across social divides in the first half of the 20th century. May 18: Know Your City Leaders

All community members are invited to an evening with Dennis Herrera and Ross Mirkarimi. Herrera is San Fancisco City Attorney and is running for mayor of the city. Supervisor Mirkarimi is running for the sheriff of the city and county of San Francisco.

Kathy Saade Kenny

Katrina in Five Worlds/Katrina en Cinco Mundosis the bilingual biography of her Palestinian grandmother, Katrina Sa’ade. Kathy has been a champion of the Palestinian cause for more than 20 years.  In the 1990's, she founded a chapter of Women in Black, which held a weekly vigil in San Francisco to call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.  From 2007 to 2009, she served as president of the Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, whose mission is to enhance public understanding of Arab culture and to provide alternative representations of Arabs that contradict the stereotypical images in the American mass media.   
 
Kathy has also co-written a movie screenplay based on Katrina's life story.  She divides her time between Oakland, CA and Mexico, and is a citizen of both countries.
