The key to growing in holiness

December 15, 2010

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7

What's your main purpose in life? I think many Christians out there would give a nice Sunday School answer to this question. They'd say their purpose is "to honor God," or "to tell the world about Jesus." But so often there's a disconnect between what so many say and how they actually live.

When I get away from church, I hear many Christians today talking about wanting to be happy or wanting to be healthy. And there's nothing wrong with that! But very seldom do I hear people talking about wanting to be holy.

The word used in today's passage, sanctification, simply means to be set apart, holy, and distinctively different. Sanctification is a lifelong process in which every believer grows more and more in Christ-likeness.

So how can you get on the road to sanctification? The first key element is constant self-examination. So pray and ask God to show you areas in your life that don't line up with him. Second, seek his will in the Scripture and ask him to help you align your thoughts and behavior with his. And third, find a group of believers you trust and grow together with them.

Every Christian is a work in progress when it comes to growing in holiness. But as the Holy Spirit works in your life, you can be confident that God will make you more like him as you submit your will to his!

GROW IN CHRIST-LIKENESS BY EXAMINING YOURSELF, SEEKING GOD'S WILL, AND MATURING WITH OTHER BELIEVERS.
