Are you a spectator or a player?
November 22, 2010
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2
Bud Wilkinson, the former coach at the University of Oklahoma, was once describing a football game and said, "A football game in America today is 60, 70, or 80 thousand screaming fans in the stands desperately in need of exercise cheering for 22 men on the field desperately in need of rest!"
The human authors of the Bible often used athletic terminology and metaphors in order to describe the Christian life. And I love that because the Christian life should be exciting! It's not the boring existence that so many have made it out to be.
You know, I've always thought the greatest job in the world would be an NFL backup kicker. All you typically do is sit on the sideline and make money! But in reality, I've never met a person who signed up to play a sport just so they could watch. We all have a God-given desire to be a part of what's happening on the field!
Now unfortunately, this all too often doesn't translate to the Christian life for many people. Yes, they read their Bible and pray, but they don't really see themselves as a part of God's plan. They're just watching from the sidelines.
So in the Christian life, who are you? Are you one of the tens of thousands of screaming fans in need of exercise? Or are you one of the few who are on the field?
DON'T JUST WATCH GOD'S WORK FROM THE SIDELINES. GET UP AND RUN THE RACE HE HAS SET BEFORE YOU!
