October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship, where one party uses physical, verbal, emotional, psychological or sexual tactics to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or gender and our community is not any different. In 2009-2010 ACCC helped 15 domestic violence victims and their children. Ending domestic violence requires a collaborative effort of every part of our society. If you know of anyone that needs help. Please contact the ACCC at 415-664-2200 ext 18.

Sumbul Ali-Karamali, author of "The Muslim Next Door: The Quran, the Media, and that Veil Thing," in conversation with playwright Wajahat Ali and Jason van Boom
Sumbul Ali-Karamali combines scholarship and storytelling in "The Muslim Next Door." This book responds to the questions Muslims get in daily life from friends, co-workers, and strangers. It makes scholarship about the real principles of Islam, and the history of Islamophobia, accessible to everyone. "This book is basically what you wish you can give to those people who ask you all those questions that you have to answer over and over again. Now you can just hand them this book and trust that it'll answer their questions." - Muslimah Media Watch
"The Muslim Next Door" won the Bronze Medal Award in the 2009 National Independent Publisher Book Awards in the multicultural adult non-fiction category. Islam and Authors is sponsored by Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California, Center for Islamic Studies at Graduate Theological Union, California Institute of Integral Studies, Islamic Scholarship Fund, Council for American Islamic Relations- San Francico Bay Area, ILLUME Magazine, Islamic Networks Group, UC Berkeley Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project.
