(Courtesy of the artists)   The Japanese Studies Center in California State University Los Angeles celebrates its 35th anniversary by presenting a Kabuki dance performance, lecture, and hands-on workshop given by two masters.   "Kabuki: Performing Art and Culture in Japan" will be held at Music Hall in the Cal State LA campus at 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032, on Thursday, October 21, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Open to public. Admission free. Campus parking fee required.   (The venue has been changed from State Playhouse which is located next to Music Hall.)   The Japanese Studies Center was established by Dr. Kazumitsu Kato in 1975 to sponsor Japan-related programs; promote interchange and exchange among scholars, students, and the community; and serve as a resource and information clearinghouse for persons interested in increasing their knowledge and understanding of Japan.   It was intended to be an adjunct of the Japanese program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. The directors have been full-time tenure track or tenured faculty in the Japanese program.   The immediate former director is Dr. Eri Yasuhara who is currently Dean of College of Arts and Letter at California State University San Bernardino. The current director is Dr. Sachiko Matsunaga since 2000. Current faculties are Dr. Toshiko Yokota as Associate Director, and Dr. Chisato Koike as supporting faculty and faculty advisor to the Japan Club in Cal State LA.   The October 21 program will feature professional dance master Fujima Toyohiro and professional Kabuki actor Nakamura Gankyo.   Fujima Toyohiro is a leading Japanese classical dancer from the Kansai region representing the Fujima School of Japanese classical dance of Tokyo.   Nakamura Gankyo of Los Angeles, the first non-Japanese citizen to be accepted into one of the two kabuki schools in Japan, was trained under National Living Treasure Sakata Tojuro, and has performed in all of the major kabuki theaters throughout Japan.   This event provides students and public with a rare opportunity to experience the authentic Japanese performing art from the 17th century.   Fujima Toyohiro and Nakamura Gankyo will perform "Kyo Ningyo" and this will be followed by a lecture on the history of the performing arts in Japan by Nakamura Gankyo.
