Photo exhibit to evoke nostalgic memories of Japanese-American at Little Tokyo

To coincide with the Nisei Week Festival, the Hold Up Art Gallery currently presents "Mixed Arare" photographic exhibit by Japanese-American artists David Osako and Christy Ishimine.

"Mixed Arare" is a phrase taken from the labels of the cellophane bags of assorted senbei (rice crackers). The photographic images include various Japanese-American events and summer dance festivals throughout Southern California, with a special emphasis on Nisei Week and Tanabata Festival in Little Tokyo.

Some images are intended to evoke nostalgic memories of growing up Japanese-American; others draw from those memories to express new points of view about both past and future, from Japanese-American perspective.

David Osako has been an artist and photographer all his life, though in recent years he has practiced also as a mediator and attorney. Raised in Southern California, her moved north to attend U.C. Berkeley and the University of San Francisco for his undergraduate and law degrees, then returned to Los Angeles to commence a new life in the creative arts.

As a "hapa" (child of mixed racial marriage), he was raised primarily by his Japanese mother, and attended the former Maryknoll Elementary School on South Hewitt Street, a few blocks away from the Hold Up Art Gallery.

Christy Ishimine is a third generation Japanese-American Los Angelino. She graduated from Southern California Institute of Architecture and pursued a career in architecture, interior design and historic architectural residential restoration.

Today she is focusing on historic and cultural book-making of Little Tokyo, Obon festivals and Japanese-American culture.

Hold Up Art Gallery is located at 358 East Second Street, Los Angeles, CA 90027, (213) 221-4585, info@holdupart.com
